Privacy Policy

Last updated: 2 October 2026

1. Introduction

Tapread (“we”, “us” or “our”) operates the Tapread app for iPhone and iPad and the website tapread.app (the “Services”). This policy explains what information we collect when you use the Services, how we use it, and the choices you have.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Information you provide

  • Text for translation. When you tap a word or select a phrase, the word or phrase and the sentence around it (up to about 240 characters) are sent to our servers, together with the book’s language and the language you translate into.
  • Text for narration. When you ask for narration, the text of the chapters you choose, the book and chapter titles, and the voice you pick are sent to our servers.
  • Sign in with Apple (optional). If you sign in, Apple gives us an identifier for your account. If you choose to share your first name, it is kept on your device and in your own iCloud, not on our servers.
  • Profile. The name and photo you set in your profile stay on your device.
  • Communications. Messages you send to [email protected]. The Send feedback button adds the app version, the iOS version and a short summary of recent crashes, if any. You see all of it before you send.

2.2 Information collected automatically

  • A random account number that our servers issue to your device. It is not linked to your name, email or Apple Account.
  • Your IP address, used only to limit abuse of the Services.
  • Usage counts: how many translations you used today and, with Tapread Premium, how many narration hours you used this month.
  • Server logs of recent lookups (word, sentence, answer and time), without your account number or IP address, used to find and fix errors.

2.3 Information from Apple

If you subscribe, the app sends us the signed subscription record that Apple provides, so we can count your narration hours. It contains no payment details and no personal details.

2.4 What we do not collect

Your book files never leave your device. We do not collect your email, contacts or location, and we use no advertising identifiers, analytics or tracking. The website sets no cookies.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use this information to translate words and sentences, make narration, count free translations and narration hours, keep your account working, answer your messages, protect the Services from abuse, and fix errors. We do not use it for advertising or profiling.

4. AI and Data Processing

Tapread uses artificial intelligence to translate words and sentences and to read books aloud with synthetic voices. The language model runs on our own server. The text-to-speech model is our own copy too, but it runs on graphics processors we rent from Runpod: when you choose to listen to a chapter, its text is sent there to be read aloud. Your text is not sent to any third-party AI provider, and it is not used to train any AI model.

5. Information Sharing and Disclosure

We do not sell your personal information.

5.1 Service providers

We rent a server from a hosting provider in Germany. It runs the language model, our app server, this website and our email, including support messages. Cloudflare provides secure connections and protection from attacks and carries traffic to that server. Runpod rents us the graphics processors that run our text-to-speech model; the text of chapters you choose to listen to is processed there. They process data only on our behalf and under contract.

5.2 Apple

Apple processes your purchases, Sign in with Apple and iCloud sync under its own privacy policy. Your saved words, highlights, notes and bookmarks sync through your private iCloud database, which we cannot read.

We may disclose information if required by law, to enforce our Terms and Conditions, or to protect the rights and safety of our users and the Services.

5.4 Business transfers

If Tapread is involved in a merger or acquisition, information may be transferred as part of it. We will tell you in advance.

6. Data Security

Data is encrypted in transit. Access to our servers is restricted and protected with keys. We keep the data we hold to a minimum. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your information.

7. Data Retention

  • Cached translations: 30 days. They are not linked to any account.
  • Your random account number: 90 days, then replaced.
  • Daily translation counts: 7 days.
  • IP addresses: about one hour.
  • Server logs: a rolling log of up to 10 MB, overwritten as it grows.
  • Narration requests: until you delete your account.
  • Narrated audio: kept under a fingerprint of the text, not under your account, so the same chapter can play again without being narrated twice. It is only delivered to a device that sends the same text.
  • Narration hours: while your subscription exists.
  • Sign in with Apple data: until you delete your account.
  • Backups: our server data is copied once a day and each copy is kept for 14 days. Data you delete can remain in these copies until they expire.

8. Your Rights and Choices

8.1 Deletion

Delete your account in the app under Profile, then Delete account. This revokes Sign in with Apple, erases your synced words, highlights, notes and bookmarks, and removes your narration requests from our servers. Deleting the app removes everything stored on your device.

8.2 Access, correction and portability

You can ask for a copy of your information or ask us to correct it by writing to [email protected].

8.3 Objection and restriction

You can object to certain processing or ask us to limit it.

8.4 iCloud sync

You can turn iCloud sync for Tapread on or off in your device’s Settings.

8.5 Marketing

We do not send marketing messages.

9. Children’s Privacy

The Services are not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If we learn that we have, we will delete it promptly.

10. International Data Transfers

Our servers are in Germany, in the European Union. Tapread is operated from Ukraine, and Cloudflare carries traffic through its worldwide network. Narration runs on Runpod’s graphics processors, which can be in data centres outside the European Economic Area, including the United States. Where information is transferred outside the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses.

11. Jurisdiction-Specific Rights

11.1 EU, EEA and UK users

We process your information to provide the Services you ask for, and for our legitimate interests in keeping them secure and working. You have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict and port your information, to object to processing, and to complain to your local data protection authority.

11.2 California residents

You have the right to know what personal information we collect and use, to request its deletion or correction, and to be free from discrimination for using these rights. We do not sell or share personal information.

11.3 Users in Ukraine

We process your information in line with the Law of Ukraine “On Personal Data Protection”. You can complain to the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights.

12. Third-Party Services

The App Store, Sign in with Apple and iCloud are provided by Apple under its own terms and privacy policy. We are not responsible for Apple’s practices.

13. Changes to This Policy

We will post updates on this page with a new date. For significant changes, we will also tell you in the app.
